Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
|
Because a Vertical Axis Wind Turnine (VAWT) is designed to turn at much slower rpm’s, they will produce energy at lower wind speeds and are more acceptable for urban areas where noise pollution is a concern. Particularly, VAWTs can be put in an urban environment because they can typically operate in turbulent wind normally found in those environments. The vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is able to meet customers’ wind power needs and can be used in places where you would not normally see a traditional wind turbine. DARcorporation was involved in the aerodynamic and structural design of the SkyDrill Power Systems VAWT. Two-Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis were conducted on various blade profiles to see which profile yielded a better performance. After the blade profile analysis, a series of Three-Dimensional CFD cases were analyzed and studied. The performance parameters were extracted from the results of these CFD cases. Finite Element models were created with load cases from CFD analysis. Normal modes and frequency response of the structure was analyzed. |
